If wine by itself isn’t enough to warm you up on a winter day, try this hot wine beverage invented hundreds of years ago in Europe. Adapted from Joy of Cooking, page 65.
1 ½ cups dry red wine (we used Cabernet Sauvignon)
¼ cup sugar
¼ tsp. ground nutmeg
4 whole cloves or 1/8 tsp. ground cloves
1 cinnamon stick or ¼ tsp. ground cinnamon
2 slices of lemon
In a medium sauce pan, combine wine and sugar. Stir over medium-low heat to dissolve sugar. Add remaining ingredients, squeezing lemon slightly to release juice. Cover tightly and heat thoroughly just to boiling. Strain into mugs and serve hot.
The lemon slices, whole cloves and cinnamon stick can be reused to heat up a second round.
Makes 2 servings. Recipe may be multiplied and served in a slow cooker as a party beverage.
Cool off this summer with a chilled wine cocktail. Here are two versions of a traditional Spanish drink, adapted from www.spain-recipes.com:

½ cup lemonade, regular or diet
½ tsp. sugar
1 wedge of lemon
1 large strawberry, sliced
In a 12 ounce glass, stir together all ingredients until sugar is dissolved. Add ice.
Makes 1 serving. To make a pitcher, multiply the recipe by 4 or 6.
½ cup white wine, sweet or dry to taste, chilled
1 tbsp. rum or vodka (optional)
½ cup lemonade, regular or diet
½ tsp. sugar
1 wedge of lemon
1 wedge of lime
1 slice of an orange, halved
